Our Soil is Alive

We are creating terra preta!

After realizing it takes 1,000 years for the forest floor to create 1 inch of topsoil, we knew we had to help nature speed up this process by always adding as much as possible.

Adding biomass to the food forest is key to healthy, nutrient-rich soil, trees, and plants. We're promoting soil microbes that aid plant growth, we're planting dynamic accumulators, nitrogen-fixing plants, and mushrooms. We begin to see prolific results in just a few weeks.

We also build our soil by cutting down unwanted plants and leaving them to break down and build up the soil.

We're storing nutrients in the soil for future generations

We know Soil microorganisms, fungi, and bacteria are critical to soil health.

We plant nitrogen-fixing plants, as well as deep tap-rooted plants that help bring up minerals, beneficial bacteria, fungi, microbes, and nutrients to the soil. We know when soil is left undisturbed, beneficial soil organisms can establish their communities and help break down our organic matter into nutrients plants use, we also know mushrooms link up with our plant roots, helping them access water, and improve our soil structure, knowing the mycorrhizal network helps plants communicate with each other is pretty amazing and we're using this to our advantage.

A healthy soil biome is important for nutrient cycling and suppressing plant diseases. As soil organic matter improves, so does the soil’s internal structure, increasing the soil’s capacity to grow more healthy, nutrient-dense crops

Keeping carbon in the ground by not tilling

Covering our soil with plants is one way we keep the nutrients and water on our land.

We're connecting to the atmosphere by having healthy soil that is alive

Eating Straight from the Soil

Harvesting fresh from our soil is helping us boost our immune system, prevent allergies, detoxify our body, and provide us with vital minerals our bodies need.

We're sequestering carbon with our healthy soil
